Recent statistics show that up to 60% of all work-related injuries can be attributed to misuse or overuse injuries, these conditions are often referred to as repetitive strain injuries or RSI. It is relatively easy to upgrade workstations and provide training to employees to reduce the impact of work on the body. However, the main issue remains over use, and as such RSI often still occurs. As RSI affects muscles, ligaments and other soft tissues of the wrist, arm, forearm, chest, shoulders, neck and hands, remedial massage can address the majority of the dysfunction and pain.
With early diagnosis over 90% of RSI cases can be treated with conservative treatment. Below are some of the common treatment options for RSI:
Self Treatment | Self Help
A good starting point for treating RSI is self treatment. Implementing some simple stretching exercises, taking frequent breaks, varying tasks throughout the day and changing your desk positioning are examples of self help that may heal, ease the pain and reduce the chances of reoccurrence.
Alternative Therapies | Remedial Massage For RSI
Depending on the severity of the symptoms, your GP may advise a range of alternative treatments, such as remedial massage, osteopathy, myofascial release, myotherapy, acupuncture, cupping, and physiotherapy. Remedial massage is often used to effectively treat RSI as it targets and breaks down the scar tissues or “knots” that have formed due to the repetitive strain.
Medications | RSI
Although treatment through the use of medications is not very effective in the long term, your doctor may recommend some OTC painkillers, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications or creams and sleeping pills if the symptoms are severe and the pain is unbearable.
Surgery For RSI (A last resort)
Depending on the severity of the injury and your response to conservative treatment, your doctor may recommend surgery as a last resort. Surgery is usually recommended to treat very specific problems with the tendons or nerves. For more information speak with your GP.
