There is no simple answer to the question “what is yoga”; you can ask ten yoga experts and all of them will answer it in a distinct and different way. Similarly, you can attend ten different yoga classes and you will likely have ten different experiences. However, there is one fact about yoga that is common – it is one of the most popular, if not the most popular stretching regime for physical, mental and emotional well-being.
The word “Yoga” is actually derived from the Sanskrit word “Yuj” which means “to unite” or “to control“. In practice, it refers to the union between the mind and the body which is achieved by following many traditional yogic paths. Yoga makes use of breathing exercises, stretching techniques, meditation and various other relaxation techniques.
Yoga is the oldest known physical discipline known to mankind. It has been practiced in many parts of the world for centuries now and gradually has become popular in the Western culture because of the various health benefits that have been proven through science.
