Remedial Massage For Jaw PainRemedial Massage For Jaw Pain

Many of our remedial massage clients at Melbourne Natural Therapies suffer from jaw pain. It is a very common problem with people working in desk jobs and/or high stress positions. It often affects people between 20-40 but can affect people of all ages.

This condition is often referred to as TMJ. The temporomandibular joint is located where the jaw connects to the temple. This joint is almost always active in some respect as it is involved in chewing, speaking and making facial expressions. It is also active in sleep with many people as they are clenching or grinding.

There are many symptoms related to TMJ issues, however some common ones are:

  • Headaches, particularly at the temples
  • Neck pain, generally at the base of the skull
  • Dizziness or balance issues
  • Ear pain
  • Pain when chewing
  • Face pain
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Clicking in the jaw
  • Jaw alignment issues

Remedial massage is not only able to treat the tight muscles but also has a relaxation effect that can minimise the chance of clenching and grinding at night. Our remedial massage therapists at Melbourne Natural Therapies are also able to give you self care methods to use at home. Some self care methods can include:

  • Heat packs at night to reduce pain and relax the muscles
  • Relaxation exercises to do before bed
  • Self treatment techniques
  • Stretches
