Jaw pain is a very common issue due to the modern work environment, and is exacerbated by high stress levels. Most commonly it affects people between 20-40 years of age, however it can affect people of all ages. This painful disorder is often referred to as TMJ or temporomandibular disorder.

What Is TMJ?

The temporomandibular joint is located where the jaw connects to the temple. This joint is active almost constantly in some way, as it is involved in speaking, chewing and making most of our facial expressions. It is also commonly active during sleep as many people clench or grind. The TMJ is a bilateral joint that works
as one unit, the right and left joints cannot work independently. The TMJ also has a  disc in between the joint that is made of dense
fibrocartilagenous tissue. The disc separates each joint into two compartments.

There are many symptoms related to TMJ issues, however some common ones are:

  • Pain chewing
  • Clicking in the jaw
  • Face pain
  • Ear pain
  • Headaches
  • Neck pain, often at the base of the skull
  • Dizziness and issues with balance
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Jaw alignment issues

Remedial massage is not only able to treat the tight muscles but also has a relaxation effect that can reduce the chance of grinding or clenching when sleeping.
