What can we do to fix this?
A lot of employers are implementing strategies to combat this issue. In Melbourne, it is now common to see or hear about standing desks, pilates and yoga classes, fun runs and various other activities to try and move away from the old 9-5 seated position.
However, even though the office spaces of Melbourne are changing, there are still many instances of lower back problems occurring.
So how can remedial massage help?
Well, the best way to think about it is imagine exactly what we are doing to our muscles. Even though exercise and movement is excellent for a majority of people who have tension here and there, sometimes it needs to be the right type of exercise to combat poor movement patterns or deficiencies in movement that may be causing the pain in the first place. That’s where remedial massage comes in.
It is rare for us to tell anyone not to exercise, or go to their yoga class, but we often find ourselves prescribing a set of exercises or stretches to start combating poor movement patterns along with these classes. Remedial massage can also lengthen tight muscles that have occurred from the sedentary lifestyle of modern work and help correct imbalances resulting from the static positions we are in for long periods at our work stations. The benefit of changing these movement patterns is that people are able to move more efficiently without loading joints and muscles unnecessarily. With a correctly and evenly distributed load on the body and the right workplace interventions, we have found that most individuals are able to enjoy a pain free work-life balance.
Your office hasn’t implemented these different programs yet. So what now?
Well its not all bad news. New findings by researchers from Norwegian University of Science and Technology and the University of Queensland suggest sitting for more than seven hours a day may not be so harmful if you keep fit outside of work hours. And keep in mind this doesn’t just mean a casual stroll around the office. To get the benefits of a pain free lifestyle, the research suggests you need to actually be fit. This means getting out to one of the beautiful parks Melbourne has to offer at lunch time for at least 30 minutes, or going to your local gym for the same amount of time 2-3 times a week.
