Neck pain is an extremely common issue, over 60% of the population will experience neck pain at some point in their lives. Neck stretches are crucial to maintain the neck muscles and reduce the chance of experiencing neck pain.
Often the pain is experienced in the neck, however the symptoms can actually be caused by numerous other issue. Neck pain often occurs due to muscle tension in the neck and upper back, or an impingement of the nerves exiting the spine.
The head (which can account for 8% of the entire body weight) is supported by the neck and upper back, and it is these areas that commonly cause muscular neck pain.

Use the above neck stretches 1-2 times daily. These will help to release the main neck muscles that are involved in our modern day to day lives
Apply heat
A heat pack or wheat bag on your neck can reduce muscular tension, increase circulation and make stretching easier. However, if there is inflammation present, avoid heat.
Be mindful of your posture
If you are holding yourself with a forward head posture it will increase the load on the neck and shoulder muscles substantially. Be aware of sitting and standing straight to reduce the pressure on these muscles groups.
