The glutes are a group of three muscles that make up the butt gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus. The glutes move the hip joint into extension, abduction, external rotation and internal rotation.
Glute max is the largest of the glute muscles and makes up a large portion of the shape and appearance of the whole hip area. Glute med is a broader muscle situated at the lateral surface of the pelvis. Glute min is the smallest of the glutes and is situated directly under glute med.
The glutes can become very tight from seated or standing work and as such it is really important for modern humans to be stretching this group of muscles regularly.
Many people also work their glutes heavily at the gym and with all those squats, lunges, step-ups and hip thrusts, you will certainly be needing some stretching also. The glutes are the biggest muscle group in your body, which means they do a lot of the heavy lifting.
