remedial massage and myotherapy melbourne

Myotherapy vs Remedial Massage

This is a question that confuses many of our clients (and sometimes us too). There are some clear differences, however, you can have treatment from a myotherapist or remedial therapist which seems almost exactly the same. So what is the difference between myotherapy and remedial massage?

Myotherapy and Remedial Massage

The easiest way to differentiate between the 2 is to look at education. Myotherapists complete an advanced diploma in remedial massage, as such a myotherapist is a remedial massage therapist with a higher qualification. The additional things covered in an adv dip are dry needling, advanced assessment, exercise rehabilitation, ultrasound, tens and cupping. In general a myotherapist has a broader range of techniques to use in treatment.

Ongoing Professional Development

cupping melbourneBoth myotherapists and remedial massage therapists need to gain professional development points every year to remain registered with their associations and health funds. There are many courses that therapists can complete in order to gain these points (unfortunately this muddies the waters even further). For instance, a remedial massage therapist could do a PD course in dry needling or cupping. As a result, they are still registered as a remedial massage therapist, but they can also provide services that a myotherapist offers.

How We Treat

At both of our clinics we have a range of remedial massage therapists and myotherapists. As we realise the choice between modalities can be confusing we regularly update Our Team Page so you have clear information on how each practitioner treats and the treatment options they provide. If you are purely wanting massage in your session all of our practitioners work in a very similar way whether they are remedial massage therapists or myotherapists.

As the massage industry grows and becomes more advanced we are seeing constant changes in the education levels and professionalism of our industry. This is an excellent thing for practitioners and clients but is primarily what’s causing the confusion.
